Raised bed Garden- with natural clay- update
Well the garden bed is coming along. the walls are almost as solid as a rock even without concrete and the more i wet it and let it dry, the harder it gets… It is normal for it to crack since it shrinks, the cracks show up where it was not packed solid but they can easily be repaired and it does not seem to affect the integrity or strength. it will rain this week, so we will get to see how much erosion if any observable…. thus far im VERY happy with how this is turning out.. There are NO cinder blocks under the clay to support it.. just soil/ clay only…. After 1 week it is drying nicely and i can even dance on it with no cracking… This is so much fun. The jackrabbits have been my number one helper, since they are creating easy to dig soil/clay quarries for me in the pasture… from the dirt they dig up from tunneling…
Donna’s Garden – Sealing Terra Cotta Containers for Edible Plants
I found a product to seal my terra cotta pots! I have been putting off this project because I could not find a product to seal my porous pots. I stumbled on a video on You Tube regarding a completely different subject and learned the non-toxic item promoted in the video could also be used for sealing concrete, which is a porous surface —yes—just like terra cotta! SCORE! So this is an experiment, but I am looking forward to the outcome. I prepped the pots for sealing in this video: www.youtube.com Here is the video on the product Water Glass: www.youtube.com
Jacob’s Well Gardens
Tom and Dave gave me an inspiring tour of their two gardens off the alley in downtown Vancouver (Chinatown – Strathcona). Found between Hastings and Pender Streets in the block between Dunlevy and Jackson Avenues, healthy vegetables growing in trucked-in City compost look up at the high concrete walls of local businesses. Simple cinder block garden
(Had to re-upload) I took this video a few weeks ago and need to do another because things have changed a lot since. I pulled most of the overgrown spring onions and planted various things in their place. Everything is growing so fast, recently I had to harvest some of the radishes and some of the newer spring onions. The peas are climbing and well….things are on the move! 3/11

Radian garden makeover
On Thursday 22 September we took on the challenge to develop two areas of land on our year old Oakfield Gardens development in Southampton, in a “Ground Force” style one day makeover. And who could be better to give advice on gardening and to get stuck in with the digging, lifting and planting, than local TV gardener Charlie Dimmock! The team met at 8am with their pre-made plans and digging commenced! In just eight hours the scrub land at one end of the development was turned into an amazing eco-garden with log piles for bugs and a bog garden to encourage more wildlife, as well as natural seating areas for the residents to enjoy. The piece of land in the middle of the two blocks of apartments had been allocated for bike sheds but this would have meant a concrete courtyard and blocking out the trees and light. The bike sheds have been relocated and now there is a turfed area, beautiful raised beds with pretty flowers and a seating area for residents.
The Garden 5 – Cinder block garden
After a week of storms I’m surprised to see that it is showing some signs of life. There are 2 more days of heavy rain expected….then we should be getting some much needed and missed sunshine.
