How I am building raised garden beds in my backyard with free wood!
Here is a short video showing how I am building my raised beds for my backyard garden. I am using free wood and give you some ideas for how you can do this for almost free as well.
What to do with this infested yard?
So my boyfriend purchased a house in October and I was all excited because even though the yard is small I would be able to plant a garden and some trees. Now I am not fond of worms but I can deal with them, but I really hate snakes. We found one in the basement about a week or two ago. I pretty much had a panic attack, but my bf convinced me that it was just a fluke since we live in a city and near the beach. So I relatively go over it. So I noticed while trying to clean up the yard that there are a lot of snails and lots of dead ones too. Odd, but okay. So now I’m digging up some areas that were left neglected planning on putting some mulch and shrubs, I’m digging and raking then all of a sudden I see two snakes in the dirt!!! I’m freaked out. How much more crap could possibly be in this yard!!! I’ve never had this problem before and I’ve lived in two other places!!! I just purchased wood for a raised bed planter, and I am petrified at what I am going to find in that yard! And 75% of it is concrete, go figure.
By infested I mean, infested with creepy crawlers more than the average yard
How to Heighten Sleigh Bed? Darn legs!?
Here’s the problem. I have a sleigh bed so I can’t put the typical bed lifts on the feet of my bed. This is because the feet on my bed is like an inch thick and 5 inches wide. The typical bed lifts are either square or circular.
Here is my bed:

In a creative way (besides cinder blocks lmao) what can I put to raise my bed? I want to buy some wood, put it together somehow, sand it and stain it so that it won’t stick out too bad. Maybe even put a small molding around it or something. I don’t know.
Any creative ideas out there? I have a queen bed.
Your time is greatly appreciated!

TimberSIL wood non-toxic raised garden beds at the Solano Community Garden in Downtown Los Angeles, CA. The first TimberSIL raised garden bed was installed two years prior to this video (2009), the second one year prior to the video (2010). The TimberSIL wood has show no loss of mass in either case. TimberSIL wood is the only preserved wood product approved by the EPA as a Non-Toxic Barrier product, stopping pest with only a physical barrier (glass) and without the use of pesticides. TimberSIL wood also has a Class-A fire rating, but it’s the non-toxic rot resistance that is the benefit in this application. www.woodwontburn.com timbersil.wordpress.com

How to keep rats from digging down to the bottom of the cage?
Not a big deal, but if I can find a way to prevent it I’d very much appreciate the advice! I use old clothing for their bedding, and I built their cage myself. However, they keep pushing the bedding aside (especially in the corners) I assume for warmth. Not a big deal, but it’s a lot harder to clean the rat faeces and urine off the wood!
I’ve thought of raising the bed a little with a wire mesh (much like a bird cage), and then placing the bedding on there. I figure that should not only discourage them from digging to the bottom, but also make clean up a whole lot easier, as I’d place a towel(s) underneath to collect dripping urine and faeces that slip through. And the bedding should keep them from resting on the uncomfortable mesh.
On the other hand, I’m worried I won’t be able to keep the mesh tight enough, so my rats might find it upsetting to constantly be on a springy bed. I’m also worried about them digging down anyway and somehow hurting themselves? I’m not worried about them chewing through though, I’ve used the same mesh for the front and top of their cage and when doubled up, they haven’t gotten through a single wire yet.
