How to plant a Pumpkin Seed Garden
How to build a sustainable, green, and eco-friendly pumpkin garden that anyone could do utilizing post-consumer recycled raised beds. These beds are from Greenland Gardener and the family built them in about 30 minutes. Very easy to do. Find more information and ideas on green living with Shawna Coronado at www.shawnacoronado.com. *Note — Because the FTC requires it, I am noting that Greenland Gardener sponsored the Double Bed Raised Garden. Botanical Interests sponsored the pumpkin seeds. Organic Mechanics Soil sponsored the soil used for this project. However, I would use these products even if they had not been sponsored — I like the them.

We’re going to talk about creating a soil mix for your container garden. However this can also work for raised beds. There are many soil mix recipes out there, but after much research this is what I came up with. The mix seems to have a good combination of aeration and moisture holding properties while also being readily available in most big box stores. Here’s the recipe: 2 parts Potting soil 2 parts Sphagum Peat Moss 1 part Perlite Don’t settle for dumping a bag of potting soil in your containers! This little bit of work is well worth the reward. Your plants will thank you for it! Hope that helps you all out. Get out there and take steps toward preparedness and self sufficiency! Raised Garden built with Pressure Treated Lumber?
I built two raised beds with 2"x12" PT lumber. Knowing that PT lumber should not be used for edible gardening, even thought the manufacturers have changed the chemicals to a copper compound. I initially lined the entire inside of the box with 4mm plastic sheeting and stapled to to the top edge. I did not realize that the plastic would become brittle and shred.
I am wondering if I could pull the dirt back and paint Kilz on the inside of the box to seal it. Is Kilz non toxic? Is the new PT lumber really dangerous as it leaches into vegetable garden soil?
my root vegetables are stunted in my SFG?
I have about 60 square feet of various raised beds and everything has been wildly successful except my root vegetables. Beets, turnips, carrots, even radishes! they don’t grow well, and are very undersized when I pull them. Last season I tried adding composted horse manure which everything else got a big boost out of, but not the root veggies. Next month starts "season" here in mid Florida zone 9 and I really want to solve this so we can have all these great veggies with the same abundance the rest of my garden has supplied. My gardens are 16 to 20" high, the bottom is filled with various (free) compost, composted manures, dirt, etc but the top 8-10" is Mels mix, with 1/3 each vermiculite, peat and various composts. As I said, everything else has exceeded my expectations – I still have some (browning rapidly) tomatoes in mid August, and they are usually gone by early July due to the night time heat.
any help will be greatly appreciated!

Do I need to fill my entire raised bed (3 or 4 bricks high) with dirt?
I wanted to start a project building a raised garden but didn’t want to fill the entire thing with dirt if I didn’t have to. Also, I wanted to put it up against my house and didn’t know if will damage the house or if there is something I’m to put in between, thanks a bunch!
Jail time or you remove your veggie garden from your front yard.?
not sure if you know of the story in detroit wear this lady is standing up for her right to grow her food in her front yard.
long story short there was some work done in some pipes under her front yard. They never fixed her yard and she didn’t have the money to re sod it. So she put in raised veggy garden beds and is growing veggies.
Her neighbors kids and other people from the block will go talk to her and help her with her garden. It’s not HUGE but 5 boxes can be a lot. i have seen many myself with flowers in them.
Okay I"m asking on this side of the form because i just don’t get it. why all humans are not 100% on her side. So i’m hoping i can find someone who can explain that to me.
I don’t get why a look of someone yard is more important than the food that is being created. more so in times like these when half the people can’t even get out of the homes they are in even if they wanted to.
So her backyard is full of shade there is no way someone can grow veggies to feed a family of 6 from some shade garden.
So why this. why this rule why is she getting picked on by some city who don’t agree and most of her neighbors have her back it’s the city.. (i’m sure one or two people called in)
So i ask you what’s wrong with growing veggies in your own land where ever you want when it don’t do anything but educate others and give a wonderful wholesome smell to an area..
to add there is a city ordinance that states "only suitable plant material can be in the front yards".
veggies not suitable?
a well maintained veggy garden is really pretty. i can see if it wasn’t controlled.. but this i seen photos on line looks 20X better then my grass garden of dead grass.
well i’m from the area. I know I can get free wood from homedepot because they are bent out of shape to much. Dirt is free too just dig. she had enought dug up in her own yard that i’m sure she didn’t buy things.
Plus what about the food .. do you kow where your food has been?
think about it. some guy who just got out of highschool just got a job on some farm in some low end poor area of town we can call that the farm land. he don’t care about that job. but he picks his nose as he picks your food. YUMMY.. or maybe while hidding in the corn bushes he rubs one out. and you thought that crusty stuff was just bug juices HAHAHA. gross i know but i woudln’t put it past anyone more so with peoples ethics on jobs.
not from AP but here is the local news.. http://www.google.com/search?q=woman+faces+jail+time+for+front+yard+garden&hl=en&prmd=ivnsu&source=univ&tbm=nws&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=L6ocTtGNAorogQfb5fTICQ&ved=0CEYQqAI google
Woman faces jail time for front yard garden. you will get a lot of links.. Even made TIME.
FYI i didn’t say her back yard is full of shade i really don’t know.
but if you have trees it would be good.
My house has shade i can’t get more sun.. well i could remove the house but my back yard is half of my front yard. I almost put a garden in out front. now I plan on it!
Raised flower bed?
I haven’t a sufficient amount of soil or dirt before it hits concrete so I wanted to do a raised flower bed. I have no clue what I’m doing. Do I need to lay out rocks along the bottom, or is it fine to put the soil on the ground? Any suggestions for a retaining wall? Materials? Any input would be alot of help & appreciated.
There is about 10 inches before it hits solid concrete. I’ve decided concrete blocks would look nice & be a safer bet than chemical treated wood
