Soil Solarization with Clear Plastic to Prepare Beds
UC Davis Market Garden manager explains soil solarization with clear plastic to prepare beds for small-seeded crops like carrot. The heat kills weeds seeds. Key: do not disturb (till) the beds before planting seed. You seed straight into the beds after lifting the plastic (shallow stirring of the top 1/2 inch is alright, but you don’t want to bring up the weed seeds below the layer of heated soil).
Planting Garlic.

In cold climates, cloves are planted in the fall, about six weeks before the soil freezes, and harvested in late spring. Garlic plants are usually very hardy, and are not attacked by many pests or diseases. Garlic plants are said to repel rabbits and moles. Two of the major pathogens that attack garlic are nematodes and white rot disease, which remain in the soil indefinitely once the ground has become infected. STANDEN-PEARSON UNISTAR 2012 Soil Separator & De-stoner

Two stage separation brings high performance; large diameter 320mm Duropol stars actively break down clod and make the most of soil available. Secondary separation by a web running underneath (know as UNDERweb) boosts output and improves bed finish; it’s a unique arrangement. UNISTAR removes stones and clods from the soil ‘bed’ which is to be planted, promoting more attractively shaped tubers and reducing damage to crops during harvesting through potatoes suffering friction and impact damage from hard objects.
