If you want to have fresh, home-grown vegetables all year round, the best and easiest way is to build a proper raised vegetable garden bed using untreated timber.

I built two raised beds with 2"x12" PT lumber. Knowing that PT lumber should not be used for edible gardening, even thought the manufacturers have changed the chemicals to a copper compound. I initially lined the entire inside of the box with 4mm plastic sheeting and stapled to to the top edge. I did not realize that the plastic would become brittle and shred.

I am wondering if I could pull the dirt back and paint Kilz on the inside of the box to seal it. Is Kilz non toxic? Is the new PT lumber really dangerous as it leaches into vegetable garden soil?

I am a keen gardener, growing all sorts of fruit and veg – lettuce, onions (normal) carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, runner beans etc. 2 weeks ago, I went to harvest my runner beans to discover the snails and slugs have been at them and they were un edible. I now am in the dilema that I am running out of room in my vegetable garden – I have a raised vegetable bed to stop many snails and slugs, the only place I have left is the place where I discovered my runner beans had been eaten which isn’t raised.

I am desperate to plant (before it becomes too late) my pickling onions, but I am really worried that the snails will eat them if I pu them in the same place as where the runner beans were eaten. Are snails and slugs attracted to pickling onions? I grow organically and I do not agree with putting harsh chemicals into the ground/ on my veg so please do not suggest it, I use my horses’ menure but that doesn’t seem to be working either!

hillside is approx 35-40 degrees. It is unbroken ground that I want to till and build in raised beds with drainage for each. Ever heard of this? Know anyone that has done it? This is the best area of my yard that I would like to utilize because it is difficult to mow.
The garden that I want to plant in these raised beds is vegetable garden and probably a couple of blueberry bushes and maybe some blackberries. Mostly vegetables. these beds i would like to be 3′widex10′long ea. three of them total.
